Bliss Balls and Choc Balls

I was just thinking about making some of these for our snacks this week and I’ve been feeling guilty about neglecting my blog so decided to share the recipe instead of making them!

The family will just have to starve… don’t worry, they won’t, I’ve just made muffins & granola bars! They will be posts for another day.

Anyway I’m going to give you 2 options for these yummy snack balls, fruity or chocolate. All you need is a food processor!

For the fruity, Bliss Balls…

You need:

3 cups of dates

1/2 cup dried apple

1/2 cup dried apricots

1 cup oats

1 cup shredded coconut

Extra dessicated coconut if you want to coat the balls

Soak the dates in boiling water for a minute or two whilst you blitz the apple & apricot in your food processor.

Once they’re in nice small pieces drain the dates well and add them to your food processor along with the rest of the ingredients.

Blitz everything well, maybe a couple of minutes, until the mixture is sticking together. You may need to stop the machine and scrape down the sides a few times.

The mixture is ready for rolling into balls now, but I would definitely suggest doing it with slightly wet hands or even disposable food safe gloves, otherwise it can get pretty messy! I use approx 1 tbsp per ball.

You can also roll the balls in extra dessicated coconut if you want to make them look professional.

It’s best to put them in the fridge for at least half an hour to firm up before eating but if you can’t wait that’s ok too!

You could substitute pumpkin & sunflower seeds for some or even all of the oats (if you need a gluten free option) or use any other dried fruit, as long as you keep the quantities the same. One of our favourite combinations is to replace the apricots with cranberries and 1/2 cup of seeds for 1/2 cup oats.

Choc Balls are made in a similar way

You need:

3 cups of dates

1 cup of oats

1 + 1/2 cups of shredded coconut

2 tbsp cacao powder

1 tsp vanilla

pinch of salt

Soak your dates in boiling water for a few minutes then drain well and put them in your food processor along with all the other ingredients.

Blitz it all up until it starts to stick together then roll into balls, don’t forget to wet your hands or wear gloves.

Once again you can roll in extra dessicated coconut if you like.

Put them in the fridge for at least half an hour before eating, unless you really can’t wait!

One thing to remember if you get to the point of rolling the balls and you can’t be bothered (happens regularly to me!) you can firmly press the mixture into a slice tin lined with baking paper, make sure the paper overlaps the sides a little and place it in the fridge for about an hour.

Once it’s nice and firm, lift it out by the paper and cut it into squares. It’s a much quicker option than rolling, rolling, rolling!

Keep the balls or slice in the fridge and they will last about a week.

One final note on the ingredients for these recipes, pay close attention to the labels. Many packets of coconut and especially dried fruit will have preservatives or other nasty add ins which you don’t need or want!

Woolworths Macro shredded coconut is just that, nothing added and The Source Bulk Foods is one of the few places you can buy preservative free apricots.

My kids take these to school all the time, they’re a great little snack.
